Canines are usually described as carnivorous, but domesticated canines (Rottweiler) are also omnivorous which means they can survive with an herbivorous diet. Generally, an adult Rottweiler will need around 2,200 calories a day with high protein supplements, and carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, peas, tomatoes, and berries can be included in their diet. Usually, for a puppy, a split of three to four meals is recommended, however for an adult twice as they reached adulthood. The amount of food you give your adult Rottie should not be the same as you give to a puppy or senior Rottie.

Rottweiler grooming is not difficult to perform. The short-medium length coat doesn’t require much maintenance but brushing the coat should be a weekly task because they do shed a lot. The best brush for a Rottweiler is a pin brush or a slicker brush, which will remove a lot more of the dead hairs. Clipping your Rottweiler’s nails can be done monthly by you or your vet. Bathing your Rottie as you desire normally once or twice a week or when he gets dirty wipe out the ear with a cotton ball. Do not forget to brush the teeth frequently with a vet-approved pet toothpaste.

SOCIALIZING

If you want your Rottweiler to be happy and comfortable around other dogs and humans, it is important to socialize them. Social contact with other dogs and people is exactly what will shape a Rottweiler into the kind of dog you want. It is better to start your Rottweiler’s socializing at a young age. Rottweilers are strong powerful dogs with potential to cause harm to unwarranted strangers since their nature is to protect and guard. Socialization is a major must in training a Rottweiler, introducing them to new people, a walk in the park, or outside using positive reinforcement training technique for a consistent mood behavior pattern since canines have a low attention span but are quite intelligent.

BEING MINDFUL OF HEALTH ISSUES

There are a few health issues you should be aware of, as most of these can be avoided or treated if the above mentioned points are taken into consideration.

  1.   Hip dysplasia: this results in lameness and pain in the hind legs as a result of extra weight. For the prevention of such condition supplements diets like glucosamine and chondroitin are prescribed.
  2.   Bloat: when bloat occurs, the stomach is twisted, resulting in preventing air from escaping. To avoid bloat the timing and the quantity of food should be taken into notice. TIP: Split their meals up and avoid exercise for at least 30 minutes after eating.
  3.   Osteochondritis dissecans: As Rotties grow older this issue can affect their movements and limit their movement as their joints become damaged. To help your Rottie avoid such discomfort it is important to keep their diets in check and avoid weight gain during their developmental stages.
